Hurling: symbool voor eenheid en verscheidenheid (2002)

een verkenning van sport en nationalisme in Ierland

Auteur(s): Inez Heeremans

This thesis is the outcome of research done in Ireland on the topic of the Irish sport ‘Hurling’ and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The GAA is responsible for, among other sports and activities connected to Irish culture, hurling. During a four month stay in Bama, a small village near Galway in the west of the Irish Republic, Heeremans conducted her research. The main questions she wanted to answer were:

  1. What role do hurling and the GAA have in forming Irish nationalism and an Irish national identity?
  2. What is Irish nationalism and what is Irish national identity?

Can we speak of a unique Irish nationalist experience and one unique Irish culture? Or are these numerous? Has the Irish nationalism represented by hurling, changed throughout time?
